âThe third scene is just as devoid of forensics as the first two,â Kane informed them.
âNothing at all?â Heidi asked.
âNo fingerprints, fibers, DNA, nothing, nada, zero, zilch . . .â
âWe get it,â Heidi snapped. âYou donât have anything to contribute. He left another photo, correct?â
âCorrect,â Jonathon nodded.
âAnd you showed it to Naomi?â Heidi fired off her next question.
âOf course,â he replied. His boss was not in a good mood this morning.
âAnd â¦?â
âAnd she said the photo was taken the Christmas after the fire,â he answered what he assumed would be his bossâ next question.
âTwo photos from before the fire, then he recreates a fire in her home, then a photo from after the original fire. What does all of that mean?â Heidi looked at a loss to make sense of the situation.
Jonathon didnât care about the details. He knew it meant that this guy had known Naomi as a child. That he had probably switched out the heater in her familyâs home the day of the fire.
He needed this over.
He needed to know that his family was safe.
âWe have a potential lead,â Allina spoke up.
âWell, why didnât you start with that?â Heidi demanded.
âBecause you were busy throwing question after question at us.â Allina smirked.
Heidi just glared. âSo what do you know? Who is it?â
âSince we think the original fire may have been deliberately lit, we went back to the people in her life at that time,â Allina explained.
âAnd you found someone?â Heidi interrupted.
âMaybe,â Jonathon answered. âWeâre not sure yet, but we found someone worth looking into.â
âWho is it?â Heidi interrupted again.
âIf youâd stop interrupting, I would have told you already,â Allina snapped irritably. This case was getting to her, too, only for different reasons. While Jonathon feared for the safety of his fiancée and his family, she was reminded of the crime that had ruined hers. He knew his partner and her family worked every lead tirelessly in the hope that they would find Grace and bring her home. Jonathon also knew that every single case reminded her of her familyâs situation, he didnât know how she stomached turning up to work each day. His personal brush with crime had at least had closure, but what Allina and her family went through was one big question mark.
âSorry,â Heidi muttered. âNow put us all out of our misery, please, and tell me that you know something thatâs going to wrap up this case.â
âThe family that lived across the street from Naomiâs family back then had three kids, aged thirteen, fifteen, and seventeen, two boys and a girl. The girl was the middle child, she used to babysit Naomi and her siblings quite frequently,â Jonathon told their boss.
âThe older boy, Harry Caucchi, had some troubles, he had been expelled from two different high schools, so he spent most of his time just hanging around his parentsâ house,â Allina added.
âSo why do we like him as a possible arsonist?â Heidi asked. âSorry, just curious, not interrupting.â She gave Allina a small smile.
